Welcome to Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL)

lnl flagsLNL is one of the four national labs of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). The mission is to perform basic research in nuclear physics and nuclear-astrophysics, together with applications of nuclear technologies.

Around 700 scientists from all over the world are involved in the ongoing research programs. Every day about 250 people work at LNL, half of them being INFN employees (physicists, engineers, technicians....) the remaining half coming from universities and research institutions in Italy and abroad. The laboratory budget is nearly 20 Million Euro per year, half for handling and research, half for personnel. Strength points are the development of particle accelerators and of nuclear radiation detectors, and the technology transfer.

A new laser system at INFN LNL

The system will provide resonant photoionization for the Exotic Species produced in the ISOL (Isotope Separation On-Line) Target of the SPES Facility.

The laser resonant photoionization uses the differences in atomic energy levels among diverse elements to ionize selectively the one of interest providing energy (i.e. photons) tuned to the proper level (i.e. color).

A simpler way to express this concept it is to keep in mind the flame test used in chemistry: as in this test giving broadband energy with the flame any element respond with its own proper color, it’s imaginable that giving a specific color to a mixture of elements only one responds to that energy.

To exploit this phenomenon the new laser system is made of three different state of the art TiSa tunable laser capable of 10 kHz repetition rate pulses providing up to 7 W of power in the fundamental wavelength. By means of several crystals, it is possible to have a wide range of wavelengths, deep to UV light.

With this new solid state laser system the SPES project will be capable to selectively ionize several most of the exotic species coming out from its target, delivering to the user an extremely pure radioactive ion beam.
